CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

March 31, 2015

Adalyn’s lips curved into a gleaming smile, forcing her cheeks to rise and delicate wrinkles to form around her mouth. Her eyes lit up with admiration when he greeted her at the door that late morning. Zack’s surprise visits always seemed to enliven her spirits, and she encouraged them with her optimistic twinkle.

“What can I do you for?” She hugged the front door, continuing the expression of glowing excitement.

“Just stopping by. I met with Max for lunch, down at Granny’s, and figured I’d stop in to say hi!” A gentle grin appeared across his face. He wasn’t nearly as expressive as Adalyn, though no one could ever match her. However, he meant more than he showed, and he showed it better in his actions.

“Aw, that’s sweet. How’s Max?”

“He’s doin’ well. I don’t know if you heard…”

“Max and Maddie are moving in together,” they simultaneously spoke, only to pause and laugh at their sync.

“Yeah, I heard,” Adalyn responded. Her elated grin continued to shine as bright as the sun, creating a warm tingle inside Zack’s stomach.

Pleased he’d stopped by, she enthusiastically suggested, “Say, if you’re not busy, let’s do something today.”

“Alright, sure. Beka is watching Sky right now while Mia is off doing… Mia things. Whatcha got in mind?”

She deliberated for a moment, turning some ideas over in her head. “Hmm, perhaps we could go down to the lake again before the ice turns to water?”

Though she’d just been there the day before, she was determined to appreciate every lasting moment of the frozen waters before the warmer weather swept in to melt it all away.

“That sounds like a great idea,” he happily replied.

Smiling, the cold air began nipping at her. “Oh, come in,” she offered, stepping aside. “I just have to clean up and let Rocky out before we go. It’ll be quick, I promise!”

He stepped inside her front door, instantly blasted with the familiar theme song. “Is that ‘Friends’ playing?”

“Yeah! Ever since we watched it together, I’ve kinda been obsessed.”

“I always told you it was a great show!”

“I don't disagree,” Adalyn responded as she picked up the last of the dishes that had been spread across the counter. Moving to the living room, she straightened the blanket that rested on the back of the couch. From her peripheral vision, she watched a blurb of golden fur chaotically bolt past the back door. Rocky had slipped into a zooming frenzy outside, only prolonging Adalyn’s ability to leave.

Finally panting from exhaustion, Rocky’s cheerful face appeared at the back door. Letting him back indoors, she reached for her purse. “Sorry ‘bout that, I’m ready now.”

Zack’s attention was glued to the infamous sitcom that projected on Adalyn’s television, hardly hearing her as she spoke. “Wha—oh. Great, let's go!” He hesitantly shuffled into the entryway, occasionally peeking back behind him as the laugh track echoed through Adalyn’s abode.

Prying the car door open upon arrival to the lodge, they were immediately hit with March’s brisk weather.

“You comin’?” he hollered from the sidewalk.

Adalyn hurried out of the passenger side, jogging over toward Zack.
